You need to wash them, if the detergent doesn't even work then it means the trunks have the problem I mean it means your trunks are what stinks and not the ocean so you need to buy new trunks if it's like that but first use soap, if it doesn't work then use detergent but soap often works for me. I also suggest putting them in boiling water.
